Incidence of Bloat in Lactating Dairy Cows Fed Clover-dominant Herbage and Maize Silage

چکیده
In 12 experiments in which white (Trifolium repens), red (Trifolium pratense) or Persian (Trifolium resupinatum) clovers, either with or without maize (Zea mays) silage, were fed to lactating dairy cows in northern Victoria, maize silage was shown to significantly (P < 0.01) reduce the incidence of bloat; 126 cases of bloat were recorded where the clovers were fed alone and only 3 cases were observed where maize silage was used to supplement the herbage. It was also found that, in some instances in which cows were offered white clover as the sole ration, virtually no bloat was observed whilst on other occasions, bloat was prevalent and very severe. There was a significant (P c 0.01) negative association between the incidence of bloat and the presence of large quantities of flowers in the white clover. It is suggested that this was due to high concentrations of condensed tannins in the flowers; this suggestion is discussed.

Performance of lactating dairy cows fed red clover or alfalfa silage.
The objective of this study was to compare utilization of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) by lactating dairy cows. Red clover and alfalfa were harvested and conserved as silage at two maturities in 2 consecutive yr. Each year, diets containing experimental forages and supplemental grain were fed to 16 multiparous Holstein cows in early lactation in a replicat...
متن کاملN-alkanes v. ytterbium/faecal index as two methods for estimating herbage intake of dairy cows fed on diets differing in the herbage: maize silage ratio and feeding level.
The aim of this study was to compare the n-alkanes and the ytterbium (Yb)/faecal index techniques as two methods for estimating the herbage intake of dairy cows fed indoors on different herbage : supplement ratios and feeding levels. The supplement was a mixture of maize silage and soyabean meal (ratio of 87 : 13 on a dry matter (DM) basis). In all, four treatments were studied. The herbage : s...
متن کاملAlfalfa Silage Versus Red Clover Silage or a Mixture of Alfalfa and Red Clover Silage as the Sole Forage for Lactating Dairy Cows
Introduction The large proportion of CP in alfalfa silage (AS) that is present as NPN substantially reduces the efficiency of protein utilization by lactating dairy cows (Nagel and Broderick, 1992). Red clover silage (RCS) typically has a much lower content of NPN than AS (Albrecht and Muck, 1991). In a previous feeding study (Broderick and Sterrenburg, 1996 USDFRC Res. Sum.), we found that DMI...

Effect of Lactobacillus Rhamnosus and Propionibacterium Freudenreichii Inoculated Silage on Nutrient Utilization by Dairy Cows
First cut red clover-grass mixture sward were ensiled in two pits with inoculant (Lactobacillus rhamnosus + Propionibacterium freudenreichii ssp. Shermanii) and without any additives. Fermentation quality, nutrient losses and aerobic stability of silages were determined. The inoculated silage had no butyric acid, nutrient losses were lowered by 19.4%. In inoculated silage organic matter digesti...
